Fewer Gays, but Fox Leads the Way in Network

GLAAD has released it's 16th annual "Where We Are on TV" report and it seems that there are to be fewer regularly appearing LGBT characters on network TV this year. Over all the numbers are down from 3.9% of regular characters last season to 2.9%. Or, to put it in real numbers, we now have 19 out of almost 650 roles, where we once had 23 out of nearly 600 roles. Only five of the 19 current roles are non-white actors. The more surprising thing about this survey was that the most inclusive network channel was FOX. I wonder if they are as surprised as I am...

Unsurprisingly, though LGBT characters were fewer in cable TV as well, HBO still led the diversity team, followed closely by Showtime.

Ellen and Portia Pair Up for TV

NBC has picked up a comedy by Ellen DeGeneres' production company starring Portia de Rossi. The as of yet unnamed comedy will be about a couple of fighting sisters, one of whom is to be played by di Rossi. NBC has agreed to a minimum of a pilot episode. More details just as soon as I hear about them.

Chaz Bono Signs for Dancing With the Stars

According to TMZ, Chaz Bono has signed on to do the next season of Dancing With the Stars. Chaz will be paired with a female pro dancer, which is not even remotely surprising since he's a straight man, but I can't help but remember that they said at this point that only Portia de Rossi would be allowed to do a same sex dance pairing. I'm glad this doesn't knock trans men off the list, but I still have some reservations with the appeal to a "conservative audience." Let's see how they treat Chaz when he gets on there and maybe I'll ease my opinions a bit.

Sean Hayes Making New Sitcom

Sean Hayes is on his way to a new sitcom on NBC which will follow a gay couple trying to raise a 12 year old boy. Although there have been more and more shows incorporating LGBT figures, this would be the first to show a same-sex couple as the primary stars of the show.

I'm so curious to see what type of character he'll play. His Will & Grace character was a bit much (though he did it well) and I'm hoping it's not just the same character in a different setting.

Chord Overstreet to Play Kurt's Boyfriend?

Chord Overstreet has been cast as Sam in Glee, and it's rumored that Sam will be Kurt's boyfriend when the show addresses a prom King and King theme later in the season.Sam is described as "a McKinley high school athlete who starts off as Finn (Cory Monteith)’s protégé but becomes his competition.” I think if it's true, pre-teen girls everywhere will break out in sobbing hysterics. He just looks like the pre-teen-girl-hysteric-inducing type. But maybe he'll also give a few lucky pre-teen boys something to dream about...

How Can You Not Love Johnny Weir?

I love Johnny Weir more and more every time I hear about him. Here's what I think is a clip form Be Good Johnny Weir (or at least it ends in an ad for it) where Johnny enjoys a massage machine. And I'd just like to say that if I was a man, I'd have all sorts of ridiculous sex with Johnny. But I'd still marry Anderson Cooper.

I think my gay crushes are getting out of control...

Spartacus Has Decent Gay Characters

As far as I'm concerned, Spartacus Blood and Sand deserves some credit. They not only had a gay gladiator but they treated the relationship with the same respect as any other on the show. None of the other characters skipped a beat when the two showed affection for one another because it was a normal part of life. During the same episode, the gay characters death held the same impact as that of the wife of Spartacus dying. It's a shame they were killed off so suddenly but it gives me hope that more shows will follow in the same direction.

Neil Patrick Harris on Glee!

Glee is about to get even better with a guest star appearance by Neil Patrick Harris. Joss Whedon will direct and NPH will star as a former show choir member named Bryan Adam. Have I mentioned lately that I love NPH? Definitely in my top ten gay men list.

Kathy Griffin and Mariska Hargitay Attempt an Awkward Kiss.

So apparently lesbians love Law and Order SVU. And I've been told that this is because of Mariska Hargitay. So here she is kinda, sorta, almost kissing Kathy Griffin in the most disappointing girl-on-girl scene of all time. I'm underwhelmed, but I really liked Griffin's reasoning for assuming she was a dyke. "Come on, I mean, the job and the gun and the attitude..." Almost makes up for the last line Hargitay says. Almost.

Ellen and Simon Aren't Playing Nice

Ellen DeGeneres,  who is looking incredibly hot in this picture - can you believe she's 52? is apparently having a rough time with American Idol co-judge, Simon Cowell. Radar reports that the two aren't speaking after Simon showed up late and they had to start the show without him.

“There’s two camps on the show this season,” said an Idol insider. “It’s a lot more tense than previous seasons. It seems as if Ellen has decided to try to take control since Simon is on his way out and that’s created problems.”

I haven't been a huge Idol fan, but I thought the combo of Simon and Ellen would make the show far more entertaining. But maybe they'll get really bitchy with each other and entertain me that way. I'd be all for it. So long as Ellen wins.

RuPaul Begins Another Race

RuPaul's Drag Race Season 2 is going to be starting shortly and the premiere party was held last night. I'm not a huge fan of the show, there is only so much bitching I can hear from queens but it is addictive. Plus, I must say only RuPaul could pull off this suit and then in two seconds look better than every woman I know in a dress. I'm slightly jealous.

Big Love Gay Episode

I'm pretty surprised that Big Love has a gay story line added to the mix, although I'm happy to see it. After cruising each other previously in a park, characters Alby and Dale come together again. They pick up where they left off and start macking like nobody's business. Then they start the usual guilt ridden church excuses of being gay is wrong, etc, etc. These two are going to be getting it on in no time and thank god....literally. I'm liking the direction this is going!

Situational Lesbian

It turns out Playboy girl Sarah Nile will be returning to men after being kicked off Big Brother in Italy. Her relationship with Veronica on the show was not physical but merely a friendship. I don't know about anyone else, but I generally don't make out with my friends but to each their own. Once again someone is gay for pay. It's too bad Sarah because you could have been hot.

Lucy Lawless Gets Kissed

In an upcoming episode of Spartacus, Lucy who plays Lucretia gets kissed from a another female Ilithyia. Sadly, Lucy's character doesn't seem too interested but the other half does. Maybe for all of our enjoyment she will give in just once to her lesbian tendancies.....or maybe I'm just hoping she does!

Lesbian & Bi Contestant on Top Chef

There are two out queer chefs among the 17 competitors on the sixth season of the reality series, Top Chef: Las Vegas. The show is slated to start on August 26th. Firstly, Preeti Mistry is a 33 year old bisexual male, who is an executive chef for the Bon Appetit Management Company just south of San Francisco. Secondly, Ashley Merriman is a 32 year old completely out lesbian, who is a chef at Branzino in Seattle. I'm happy to see some variety in the top chef world and hopefully they make it to the finals. I'm cheering for you both!!

Annalynne Hopes to Hook Up with Rumer

Annalynne McCord really wants to have a chance to hook up with Rumer Willis on the new 90210. I like the idea but of course it will have to be a 'one time thing only'....for example, she was too drunk or some other type of lame excuse. Anyways, this is what Annalynne had to say:
Naomi gets drunk, and she gets a little crazy. Liam's watching. Naomi wants to experiment. And then a little lip-on-lip action with Rumer Willis can't hurt anybody, right? How fabulous would that be. They totally need to make it happen!
It is exciting that she isn't against the idea and maybe if the planets align a new lesbian love story will emerge (alright maybe that's asking for too much, a girl can dream can't she).

Nurse Jackie Lesbians

Swoosie Kurtz and Blythe Danner make a great couple on the show "Nurse Jackie" this week. The Showtime channel actually showed this lesbian couple in a positive light and they were treated with dignity, which makes me very happy. I'm sick of Lesbians being protrayed as off their rocker, I mean not everyone is like me.

Brooke Dates A Lesbian

Brooke Hogan, from the reality show "Brooke Knows Best" has recently jumped on the band wagon for trying to be gay for pay. She makes a deal with her tolken Gay friend Glenn that if he went on a date with a woman so would she. Besides the fact that Brooke thought dating a girl would take away her innocence she agreed to go along for the ride (at this point, innocent wouldn't be a term anyone would use to describe her). I have to say, her date was very cute and Brooke did not deserve to go out with her! A critical part of their deal was they had to kiss their dates at the end of the night and Brooke pulled through. After all was said and done, she now admits she can now see how people of the same sex can be attracted to one another. She just doesn't play for that 'team'. The whole thing was incredibly staged and made me think of a warped after school special!

New Melrose Place Has Bisexual Character

It's official, according to afterellen.com, there will be an updated version of Melrose Place, the 1990's series revolving around a group of twenty somethings living in an upscale Los Angeles apartment complex. The new version looks like it will stick to the same type of story lines as the original. The big news surrounding this new saga is that while the original included an openly gay man, this one will include a bisexual woman. She will be a very stylish publicist named Ella, played by Katie Cassidy. Ella's bisexuality is suppose to be revealed in the pilot episode during a kiss in a club. It is suppose to be a model type who catches Ella's eye and they share a passionate kiss. I hope this doesn't just turn into another, 'let's turn the males on but not really mean it' kind of situation. Regardless, it sounds like it's going to be pretty hot to watch!

Nigel Lythgoe is Sorry

Nigel Lythgoe issued a formal apology for his homophobic remarks in the So You Think You Can Dance premier. Lythgoe stated:

"I sincerely regret the fact that I have upset people with the poor word choices and comments I made both during the taping of the So You Think You Can Dance audition and on my personal status update," said Lythgoe. "I am not homophobic and it was extremely upsetting for me to be classed as such."

"I believe the sexual orientation of an auditioner or contestant is irrelevant. The fact that I have unintentionally upset people is distressing to me and it is obvious I have made mistakes that I must learn from. I trust that my humor will be more sensitive and mindful moving forward."

GLAAD president, Neil Giuliano, has acknowledged the apology, saying:

"We certainly appreciate the dialogue and the opportunity for Nigel to help further educate people about how words and images matter," said Giuliano. "His sincere words are appreciated."
It's a shame that it took him so long to take responsibility for his idiocy, but better late than never. Let's hope this is the last of it. However, I just finally watched the clip (below the cut if you're interested) and the comments were worse than I thought. The other judges weren't much better than Lythgoe, but there was a twist I wasn't expecting - one of the dancers was straight.

Lythgoe was undoubtably the worst of the bunch with his comments, but I'd like to see the other judges apologize as well. They were blatantly reinforcing rigid gender role stereotypes and I have absolutely no doubt after watching this that they were cut from the competition for their choice of dance partners rather than anything to do with talent.
