Annie Leibovitz to Pay Gay Tax
I remember watching the Prop 8 ads that claimed that same sex couples already had all the same rights and protections as different sex couples and thinking "That's total bullshit." Here is an example of where these supposed equal rights are lacking.
One of the most famous living photographers out there, Annie Leibovitz, who has shot a bazillion celebrities is had to take out a loan against her photographs to pay some tax debt. I rarely feel sorry for celebrities who owe tax money, but the reason for this one makes me cringe. When Leibovitz's partner, Susan Sontag, died in 2004, she willed Leibovitz several properties. If the two were legally married, this would have been no problem at all, as in no money owed to the government. However, since us queers can't get married in so many places, Leibovitz was forced to pay 50% of the value of the properties in inheritance tax.
This is just plain old bullshit.
