
The New York Times has
reported on two novels that originally had gay characters but never made it to print because of censorship. Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird was one of the books listed. In the authors first version there was a homosexual relationship between the
lawyer and his client. The second book, George Orwell's 1984 was also forced to change a key relationship in the book. Winston's lover had to be turned into Julia instead of Julian. It's amazing how much control censors have on the creative process. How many other masterpieces have been changed because they didn't fit social protocol?
