Clint Eastwood Is Fine With Same Sex Marriage

Although Clint Eastwood has definitely thrown his support to the Republicans this election, he does not agree with the party on one very critical issue - same sex marriage. He is shown above on Ellen, saying that he takes the Libertarian position that the government needs to "Leave everybody alone." This is not the first time that Eastwood has asserted that marriage is between the people getting married. Back in 2011 Eastwood told GQ magazine "I don’t give a f**k about who wants to get married to anybody else! Why not?! We’re making a big deal out of things we shouldn’t be making a deal out of...Just give everybody the chance to have the life they want."

Cynthia Nixon Fights Back And Wants New York to Join Her.

The ever so lovely Cynthia Nixon encouraging New Yorkers to fight to get the senators who voted against equal marriage out of office. I'm interested to hear their strategy. I hope they're successful.

Obama Fails Same Sex Couples on the Federal Level.

Obama's promise to protect gay rights seems to be total bullshit. The New York Times wrote this brilliant article regarding the Defense of Marriage Act. I'll include a small excerpt to get to a point about how Obama is not simply saying that individual states and not the Federal Government should define marriage, but actually denying same sex couples' rights on a federal level:
Under the act, same-sex married couples who pay their taxes are ineligible for the sort of federal benefits — such as Social Security survivors’ payments and joint tax returns — that heterosexual married couples receive.
The full editorial is well worth reading. (Click here.) Please, Obama, step up and defend the rights of all your country's citizens.

Dick Cheney Believes in Freedom for Everyone (Yes, Even Us.)

The above is a video of Dick Cheney, former Republican VP speaking at the National Press Club for the Gerald R. Ford Foundation journalism awards on Monday. When asked about recent same sex marriage rulings he came out in favor of same sex marriages (but said that he believed it should still be handled on a state level rather than a national one.)
I think that freedom means freedom for everyone. As many of you know, one of my daughters is gay and it is something we have lived with for a long time in our family. I think people ought to be free to enter into any kind of union they wish. Any kind of arrangement they wish. The question of whether or not there ought to be a federal statute to protect this, I don’t support. I do believe that the historically the way marriage has been regulated is at the state level. It has always been a state issue and I think that is the way it ought to be handled, on a state-by-state basis. … But I don’t have any problem with that. People ought to get a shot at that.
Even the Repulican VP is publicly in favor. So what are we waiting for Obama?

World's First Openly Gay Prime Minister Elected In Iceland

Johanna Sigurdardottir has become the world's first openly gay person elected to head a country. Although she had already been serving as Iceland's Prime Minister for an interim before the election, her party has now been voted in. Congratulations Johanna.

Meghan McCain is Pro-Gay and Wants Republicans to Follow (and so do I!)

Whatever you likely think of her father, you have to give Meghan McCain credit for this article she wrote for The Daily Beast. I want to put my favorite bits in quotes, here, but it's a short article, so you really ought to just read the whole thing. (Click here. Now.) For those too lazy but still mildly interested, she's in favor of same sex marriage and believes that the Republican party should change its stance, even going so far as to point out Reagan's role in reversing anti-gay legislation in California. Still not biting? Fine. Some people don't like politics.

I don't remember the last time a Republican's writing made me so hopeful for our future. Maybe people like Meghan can help bring the Republicans to what they stay they stand for. Or at least make them shut up about horrors like Prop 8.

Screw "Don't Ask, Don't Tell".

Yes, I'm using this comic again. I really think it's cute and it saves me the hours of drooling on my keyboard looking for pictures of hot dykes in uniform. But I digress...

On Monday over 100 retired admirals and generals called for a repeal of the ludicrous "don't ask, don't tell" policy that prevents queers from being honest while serving in the military. Because really, why would we value things like honesty?

The move by the military veterans confronts the incoming administration of President-elect Barack Obama with a thorny political and cultural issue that dogged former President Bill Clinton early in his administration.

"As is the case with Great Britain, Israel, and other nations that allow gays and lesbians to serve openly, our service members are professionals who are able to work together effectively despite differences in race, gender, religion, and sexuality," the officers wrote.

Well over 12 000 people have been discharged from the military since 1994 under this disgusting policy of bigotry. Now, Obama, let's get this repealed post hast, yes?

Bull Shit.

I've been to depressed by the disgusting results of the vote on Prop 8 to update about what celebrities are wearing. My condolences to all of California for having to live in a place with legalized discrimination where basic equality can be stripped from minority groups by the votes of bigots.

Fuck everyone who voted yes.

Terminator OK with Gay

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger released his positions on the 12 propositions today, including a NO for Prop 8. This one sort of surprised me. I haven't been listening to anything he had to say about the issue for a while, but honestly, he best I thought we'd get out of this guy was a neutral. This is good news. Except that I had to try to type Schwarzenegger over and over again. What a terrible name. Can you imagine being the telemarketer who called him (before he was famous, people, use your imagination). Or to have to fill out that name in paperwork all the time? It's a seriously long name, and I have to double check every time I type it to make sure I didn't slip a "T" in there.

But, yeah, way to go, Arnie.

Videos and PSA's Galore for Florida Vote No on 2, California Vote No on 8 and Arizona Vote No on 102.

New Florida "Vote No on 2" video.

A somewhat controversial "Vote No on 2" video by Michael Shiavo, husband of the late Terri Shiavo.

Margaret Cho's Vote No on Prop 8 video.

Not the best videos I've seen, but I'm all for anything that defeats these guys.

Here's a very good one from a while back. Very worth watching.

And let's not forget Arizona's "Vote no for Prop 102," for which I don't have a PSA. I do, on the other hand have a news clip about people vandalizing "Yes to Prop 102" signs.

Canada Votes Today

If you live in Canada you should have voted by now. If not, then stop reading this blog and go vote. (Then come back and read it.) There aren't any hugely large queer issues in debate this year, but that doesn't mean that we don't need to take interest in politics, so call your friends and make sure everyone goes down to have their say in the future of our country.

Connecticut Rules, Portugal, Not So Much

Connecticut High Court ruled today that barring same sex marriage is unconstitutional. Portugal, on the other hand, voted by a large majority to oppose same sex marriage. Win some, lose some, I suppose. Though it's hard to say that in the face of equal rights...

Sarah Palin Talks to Katie Couric

The above video is an interview with Sarah Palin. She's a little bit horrifying. She tries to avoid a lot of issues, doesn't understand how the morning after pill works and gives the whole "one of my best friends is gay" answer to gay rights. Gay stuff at about 8:10.

More Celebrity Support Against Prop 8

Fran Drescher is helping fund the fight for equality. She and ex-husband Peter Marc Jacobson hosted a fundraiser for Love, Honor, Cherish and Equality California, two groups working against Proposition 8. The cocktail party brought in $40 000.

Thanks to the Nanny! Man, it must really blow to be constantly referred to as an old character like that. Like Neil Patrick Harris being called Doogie still. I wonder if they like that their old characters were so well known or if they just wish everyone would drop it already. I think it would get very old, very quickly.

Spielberg Loves Us, Too!

Steven Spielberg and his wife Kate Capshaw just followed in Brad Pitt's footsteps, donating $100,000 to the fight against Proposition 8, the BS proposition that would see same-sex couples in California lose their recently won right to marry. Perez Hilton reports:

Spielberg says:

"By writing discrimination into our state constitution, Proposition 8 seeks to eliminate the right of each and every citizen in our state to marry regardless of sexual orientation. Such discrimination has NO place in California's constitution, or any other."

Bruce Cohen - producer of Oscar-winning American Beauty and a vehement NO ON 8 activist - had this to add:

"It's phenomenal that Kate and Steven are affirming their unwavering commitment to equality in such a significant a way. More than 15 years ago, Steven was the first person in Hollywood who I came out to, news which he greeted with his full love and support then and ever since.
"It is my fervent hope that other entertainment industry leaders will follow the lead of Brad Pitt and the Spielbergs and fight to maintain equal rights for all Californians."

Bruce Cohen married his partner, Gabriel Catone, in June.

Cohen and his filmmaking partner Dan Jinks produced Milk, a film recounting the life of assassinated San Francisco city supervisor and activist Harvey Milk, who was also openly gay. The film is slated for release later this year.

It's great to see some big name support behind us. Curious that the actual queers in Hollywood are keeping mouth and wallet shut, but I suppose they have a little more to lose by associating with the "agenda" than their hetero counterparts.

The Gays are Surrounding McCain

So not only does John McCain accept money from gays, he actually employs them. Mark Buse, McCain's chief of staff, has been outed. Signorile reported the story, saying about the sources that:

None of these individuals would be quoted by name, though each described Buse as being rather “open” to those around him and to his family – in a “glass closet” rather than deeply undercover or trying to appear heterosexual.

The above video was taken by Buse's ex in 2000. I have a lot to say about most things political, but that's not supposed to be the point of this blog, so I'll just make crude comments. Comments like how does Bose ever think he's ever going to get laid again? Who lays the gay guy who helps ensure gay rights don't happen? Maybe Ted Haggard?

Obama Talks About Gay Rights

Barack Obama did an interview with Philadelphia Gay News discussing his commitment to gay rights issues in the US. This looks much better than the stuff that we were hearing earlier. Obama discuses a variety of rights issues here sometimes being vague, but often being quite committed to our cause. Here's hoping he means what he says. Or implies.

Obama Lets Us Down

Barack Obama is "reluctant" about his promises regarding gay rights. Having promised to do away with the military "don't ask, don't tell" rule, he is now saying he wants to go slowly when removing the barrier to open queers.

In an interview with Mark Segal of the Philadelphia Gay News, Barack Obama indicated that he would not proceed unilaterally in fulfilling his promise to do away with the "don't ask, don't tell" policy for gays in the military.

Instead, the Democratic presidential candidate said that he would work through a step-by-step process with the military brass.

"The reason," Obama said, "is because I want to make sure that when we revert 'don't ask, don't tell,' it's gone through a process and we've built a consensus or at least a clarity of that, of what my expectations are, so that it works."

He is also hesitating on same sex marriage.

Obama also said he would be reluctant to instruct his attorney general to go to court to try to overturn the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act, which denies federal recognition of same-sex marriages and gives states the right not to recognize such unions.

"I think we're going to have to take a different approach," he said, "but I am absolutely committed to the concept [that] it is not necessary." He said he would prefer to see Congress change the law.

Come on, Obama, don't let us down already!
