Jenny Owen Youngs Comes Out

Jenny Owen Youngs is a folk music singer who made two big announcements this past week.  She came out as a lesbian and is engaged to be married.  I love her reason for the announcement:
I think it is damaging and isolating for young people to look out into the world and not see a representation of their experience. To encounter others who are like you is to know that you are not alone. Even if you never meet them in real life, these representatives help to contextualize you – they are proof that you are part of something. You are not an anomaly. You are not a mistake.

Olympic Swimmers Pose for Anti-Homophobia Campaign

Florent Manaudou and Frédérick Bousquet were two of France's top athletes during the 2012 Olympics.  They aren't dating but are good friends and were approached by photographer Olivier Ciappa for the project called the picture imaginary couples. To prepare them for the shoot he told them: "You're with the person you love. Not a man, not a woman. Then, at the session, I disappear, for they are one with each other."  I think the picture turned out beautifully.  France legalized gay marriage last April and there has been some horrifying gay bashings.  This photo shoot is in response to all the negative responses.

America's Got Talent Sad Story

Jonathan Allen was kicked out of the house at 18 for being gay.  He says he has tried reaching out to his family with no luck and man, that must be hard.  I really hope his family sees how well he does and possibly reevaluates their own beliefs.  If anyone asks why the gays still want pride parades, they should listen to his story.

Nike Releases Gay Pride Shoe

I really hope Nike has stopped using child labour because I really love them.  They have released a line of sneakers under its #BeTrue line, as a nod to gay pride and LGBT people. Profits of #BeTrue sales will go to the LGBT Sports Coalition, which has set the goal to end the practice of anti-LGBT discrimination in sport by 2016.

Christina Ricci Plays Lizzie Borden

Lizzie was accused and acquitted of killing her parents with an axe while they were sleeping in Fall River, Massachusetts in 1892.  I had no idea that she was believed to be a lesbian.  After her highly-publicized trial, Lizzie supposedly went on to have a relationship with actress Nance O’ Neill. On top of that, Love letters she'd written to a female were found after her death, and she also was known to have "women's gatherings" at her home.  Well, that is your history lesson for the day.  Actual news is that Christina Ricci will be playing Lezzy, I mean Lizzie, in a new project by Lifetime.  I couldn't find any solid information on whether or not they will touch on the lesbian angle.  Either way, I will watch it because Christina is involved.

Matthew Morrison Doesn't Care

Matthew Morrison has dealt with rumours about his sexuality for years and starring on Glee hasn't helped stop them.  I like his response to people assuming he is gay:

I know my own truth. I'm in a great relationship with a woman. Maybe before it used to bother me. Then I was like, ‘This is so stupid that this bothers me. Some of my best friends in the world are gay, and if this is bothering me, then that means I have an issue with that.’ Once I figured that out for myself, I thought, ‘I don't care what anyone thinks about me.’ That's why I think I've become an ally for the gay and lesbian community. I just got [an Ally for Equality Award] the other day in Atlanta. I've very proud of my role in the community. So say what you will

Kacey Musgraves - Follow Your Arrow

This song is adorable.  If you're not a country fan, you've probably never heard of Kacey Musgraves before.  She's not gay but she is gay friendly and it is awesome to hear this song on country radio stations.
