I only posted yesterday that McDonald's in New Zealand was banning gay content on their free internet service and the company has since changed their minds. They are now allowing access to some gay related websites through their free Wi-Fi service, but others will continue to be blocked. The fast-food chain became a target after a filter blocking access to gay sites, including news and informational sites. The worst part is the company comparing gay youth resource web sites to promoting tobacco, gambling, and adult mature content websites. At least people complained.

McDonalds New Zealand Blocks Gay Content

Any gay related sites have been blocked from McDonald's locations in Wellington, New Zealand. Some sites that have been blocked include The Agender site for transgender folks, and Rainbow Youth advice site. Really? Shouldn't these sites be more acceptable considering the recent rash of gay teen suicides? McDonald's reps are saying the sites have been blocked because they are a family fast food restaurant, and content of the Internet must be suitable for children. WTF. They compare blocking the gay sites to blocking tobacco ads, gambling and adult mature content websites. Customers are complaining and hopefully that means they will relook at this policy and do the right thing.
