University of Massachusetts basketball player Derrick Gordon has come out, making him the first openly gay man to play college basketball. Derrick told his team last week with the support of his coach. He says he avoided going out and pretty much kept to himself to keep his secret safe. I'm happy he decided to come out so he can live his life fully.
I just didn't want to hide anymore, in any way. I didn't want to have to lie or sneak. I've been waiting and watching for the last few months, wondering when a Division I player would come out, and finally I just said, 'Why not me?'"
