Olympian Gus Kenworthy Comes Out

Olympic skier Gus Kenworthy has made the bold move to come out.  He revealed the big news on the cover of ESPN and then simply tweeted, 'I'm Gay'.  It's funny because it's also big news that Miley Cyrus is his BFF.

Olympic Committee Votes Against Discrimination

The Sochi Olympics was an ugly time that showed Russia discriminating against gay individuals and supporters.  The Olympic Committee has approved today that the Agenda in 2020 is to include non-discrimination with regard to sexual orientation.   The new policy states:  'Any form of discrimination with regard to a country or a person on grounds of race, religion, politics, gender or otherwise is incompatible with belonging to the Olympic Movement'.  This pretty much means that countries that discriminate against gay people will not be able to host in the future.  I really hope they stick to this because Sochi was a horrible example of what the Olympics are suppose to stand for.

Olympic Swimmer Ian Thorpe Comes Out

Swimmer Ian Thorpe won 5 medals at the Olympics in Sydney in 2000.  He has decided to tell the world he is gay and admits to being treated for alcoholism and depression in the past.  It's no wonder he needed to come out.  I wish it wasn't such a big deal for athletes but sadly it is and the more that come out the better.

Another Olympian Comes Out

Olympic luger john Fennell has come out in hopes of encouraging other gay athletes.  He competed for Canada at the Sochi Olympic games and feels the LGBT community needs more support.
I was a little distraught over the lack of leadership going into Sochi. I'm an athlete. Realistically, I put on a spandex suit and slide down a mountain. I'm no message board for political movements. But we need to have leaders in our sport community. If it takes a 19-year-old to step up and do that, I'm more than willing to use my voice or the platform that I've been given to give a figurehead to gay youth in sport.

Johnny Weir in Court for Biting Husband

Johnny Weir and his husband, Victor Voronov, had to appear in New Jersey court this week to ask a judge to dismiss the charge that Johnny bit his husband just before heading off to the Olympics. Victor says that Johnny bit him during a fight but wanted the charges dropped.  The two were apparently very lovey in court and the judge ended up granting the request.  Hopefully this teaches Johnny a lesson to avoid further embarrassment and because it's just not cool to hurt your spouse.

Ireen Wust Wins Third Olympic Gold

Out lesbian athlete Ireen Wust of the Netherlands celebrated winning three gold medals after her win in the women's 3,000 meter speed skating race in Sochi.  It must piss off Russia officials every time an openly gay person takes home medals.

I love Google

I love what google posted for the Olympics.  They put up the gay pride colours with the caption:
"The practice of sport is a human right. Every individual must have the possibility of practicing sport, without discrimination of any kind and in the Olympic spirit, which requires mutual understanding with a spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play." –Olympic Charter

Finnish Olympic Swimmer Comes Out

Finnish Olympic Swimmer Ari-Pekka Liukkonen has come out as gay just as the Sochi Olympics are around the corner.
I wanted to start a broader discussion in connection with Sochi, because it’s sad that the legislation in Russia restricts the human rights of young people and others and I hope the sports world will soon no longer find homosexuality to be any kind of news.

NBC Surprised With Protest

Activist group Queer Nation showed up this morning at The Today Show to protest NBC covering the Olympics in Sochi.  They are demanding that NBC report on the Russian government attacks on the LGBT community.  I really don't blame them because the closer we get to the Olympics the worse I start to feel that something horrible is going to happen.

Chris Pine Not Impressed

Chris Pine is a straight ally and he is not impressed with how the USA responded to Russia's anti-gay laws.  While promoting his new film he brought up how he felt about it:
I think we should do more than just send gay Olympians there. What’s happening there in terms of gay rights or the lack of it is extraordinary and awful.

Thomas Hitzlsperger Comes Out

Thomas Hitzlsperger retired from professional football in Germany last September and has decided to come out because he hopes to further the debate about homosexuality among sports professionals.  I'm sure the timing isn't coincidental with the Olympics in Sochi less than a month away.
Only in the last few years have I realized that I preferred living together with a man. I was never ashamed of being who I am but it was not always easy to sit on a table with 20 young men and listen to jokes about gays.

Olympian Greg Louganis Gets Hitched

USA Olympic gold medalist Greg Louganis married his boyfriend Johnny Chaillot.  They have been dating for just under two years and celebrated their love with a sunset ceremony.  That really seems to be the theme lately, guess I don't blame people because it would be pretty damn romantic.

Go Germany!

Germany has released their new uniforms and I can't help but notice how colourful they are.  Some might even say they look like a rainbow.  This could be Germany's response to Russia's anti-gay laws but they won't confirm that.  They are saying the design was done before the law was in place.  I'm really hoping it's a not so subtle political statement.

Why Cher Turned Down Russia

Cher was asked to be an ambassador and performer at the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia.  She turned down the invite and this is why:
It was hard. I have so many Russian friends. I have lots of Russian fans and I have so many people there that I love…So that was difficult. The Russian people that I know are great and don't agree with [the anti-gay legislation]. They just don't agree with it.

Johnny Weir Not Going to Olympics

I'm a bit sad that Johnny Weir has decided not to register for the American national championships.  This means he will not be able to compete to go to Sochi, Russia for the Olympic games this coming February.   I totally understand why he would choose to boycott Russia but I think everyone will miss out on seeing an awesome athlete compete.

Canadian Speed Skater Proud Gay

Canadian Olympic speed Skater Anastasia Bucsis says she is proud to be gay and that no athlete should feel they have to hide in Russia.  She competes in the long-track races and came out to friends and family two years ago.  She has joined a growing number of athletes who are advocating change to Russia's anti-gay laws.
I…have faith in Russia, I think — I hope — that things will get better.
