Oilers Captain Making History

Ok, for once here is a hockey player who is actually good looking.  Too many have been hit in the head one too many times.  Andrew Ference is the Captain for the Edmonton Oilers and he is going to make history on Saturday.  He will be the first Oiler to ever participate in Edmonton's pride parade.  He is an advocate for You Can Play, hoping to eradicate homophobia in sports.  I'm hoping he is gay but having him as an ally is also pretty awesome.

NHL First Totally Supportive League

The NHL has announced that the Colorado Avalanche captain Gabriel Landeskog will be the newest professional athlete to join the You Can Play Project.  This makes the NHL the first professional sports league to have each of its teams represented by players voicing their support for the LGBT community. Hopefully this will help with bullying with kids who look up to these guys.

Caitlin Cahow Comes Out

Caitlin Cahow doesn't play for Team USA anymore but she feels it's important for female athletes to feel comfortable coming out.  Caitlin is on the Board of Directors of her own hockey league and wants to speak out about why women feel they can't come out if they play hockey.

When we tried to do a video for the for You Can Play Project for the Canadian Women’s Hockey League, we had a difficult time getting gay athletes–as well as straight athletes–to participate. It was like pulling teeth with many people, whether or not it was articulated, because the assumption is that is there is “a guilty by association” philosophy with female athletes. You don’t want to be perceived as being a lesbian, and if you are a lesbian, you don’t want to fit into the stereotype. You don’t want to gratify that stereotype with a response. That’s something unique to women’s sports.
