NBC Surprised With Protest

Activist group Queer Nation showed up this morning at The Today Show to protest NBC covering the Olympics in Sochi.  They are demanding that NBC report on the Russian government attacks on the LGBT community.  I really don't blame them because the closer we get to the Olympics the worse I start to feel that something horrible is going to happen.

Chelsea Clinton had filmed two videos in support of gay marriage but were never aired due to a decision by the bosses at NBC News, where she’s been working as a correspondent.  This is incredibly sad to hear but the good news is gay marriage still won the vote despite their misguided decision.

NBC has picked up a comedy by Ellen DeGeneres' production company starring Portia de Rossi. The as of yet unnamed comedy will be about a couple of fighting sisters, one of whom is to be played by di Rossi. NBC has agreed to a minimum of a pilot episode. More details just as soon as I hear about them.

There is a new show that has been approved by NBC about the friendship of writers and longtime roommates Sascha Rothchild and Randi Barnes. The show will be called My Best Friend Is a Lesbo and it is about two best friends, one gay and one straight, who become roommates. This should be interesting.

Sean Hayes Making New Sitcom

Sean Hayes is on his way to a new sitcom on NBC which will follow a gay couple trying to raise a 12 year old boy. Although there have been more and more shows incorporating LGBT figures, this would be the first to show a same-sex couple as the primary stars of the show.

I'm so curious to see what type of character he'll play. His Will & Grace character was a bit much (though he did it well) and I'm hoping it's not just the same character in a different setting.

NBC Slights Matthew Mitcham then Apologizes

Australian diver Matthew Mitcham is the only out gay male in the Olympics this year. (Of the 10708 athletes competing there are nine lesbians and one bi female who are out as well.) So it's fairly safe to say that Mitcham is a rarity. NBC, however, failed to mention his orientation or his partner who was in the stands cheering him on. Yahoo reports:

NBC has made athletes' significant others a part of the coverage in the past, choosing to spotlight track athlete Sanya Richards’ fiancee, a love triangle between French and Italian swimmers and Kerri Walsh’s wedding ring debacle.

NBC defended their omission, though the arguments they put forth are picked apart quite nicely here. They later issued an apology for their "unintentional omission".

I'm sure the omission wasn't exactly unintentional and so I would have preferred to see NBC simply apologize for it outright rather than making it seem like an oversight. But, hey, at least they apologized. I suppose these things come slowly. Perhaps they could make it up in some way? Or make a half hearted promise not to indule in the same "unintentional" mistakes in the future? Mitcham (who won gold) has taken the whole thing very well, saying simply:

I’m happy with myself and where I am. I’m very happy with who I am and what I’ve done.
