Another Trudeau Made Histody Today

 Today in history, then Justice Minister Pierre Trudeau made history in Canada in 1968 by pushing for a bill decriminalizing homosexuality.  This was huge and it makes me smile to think that his son Justin is currently our Prime Minister and continues his family's legacy of supporting the LGBT community.

President Obama Welcomes Gay Games Participants

President Obama welcomed the thousands of fans, volunteers, and competitors at Gay Games 9, which kicked off this weekend in Cleveland Ohio.  A few years ago with the Bush administration I thought the USA was never going to move forward but Obama has created hope and inspired so many people.  That being said, Go Team Canada!!

A 12 year old trans boy has just been issued a new birth certificate in Alberta Canada.  Before this monumental event, a person could only switch their gender if they had the gender reassignment surgery.  This is a huge step for trans rights in Canada.

Tegan and Sara Kick Ass at Junos

Tegan and Sara took home awards for Pop Album of the Year, Single of the Year and Group of the Year at the Juno Awards in Winnipeg, Canada.  Don't get me wrong I love this sister duo but two things really bugged me.  Firstly, look at those pants.  They are horrible.  Secondly, their live performance was really weak.  They sound awesome singing their older stuff but this latest album is more pop/techno and they really dropped the ball.  It's too bad because they normally are amazing live.

Canadian Speed Skater Proud Gay

Canadian Olympic speed Skater Anastasia Bucsis says she is proud to be gay and that no athlete should feel they have to hide in Russia.  She competes in the long-track races and came out to friends and family two years ago.  She has joined a growing number of athletes who are advocating change to Russia's anti-gay laws.

I…have faith in Russia, I think — I hope — that things will get better.

KD Lang into Music Hall of Fame

Canada had their own music awards, The Junos, this past Sunday.   I have to admit Canada is finally stepping up in the music world and are shipping out some really great music. During this years awards, they acknowledged a Canadian great KD Lang and she was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.  She has not only contributed to the music community but stayed true to herself as an open lesbian.  This was what she had to say:

I think the fact that I’m standing here receiving this award says more about Canada than it does about me. Only in Canada could there be such a freak as k.d. Lang receiving this award.

What makes a gay soldier different from a straight soldier?

Yesterday was Veterans Day in the United States and Remembrance Day in Canada.  I hope everyone took the time to reflect on the vets who sacrificed so much so we can enjoy the rights and freedoms we have today.  That being said, the United States still needs to acknowledge that their soldiers are equal regardless if they are gay or straight and this video highlights just that.

Miss Universe Canada Transphobic

If pageants weren't bad enough, they are now transphobic. Jenna Talackova has been disqualified from the Miss Universe Canada competition because she was born a male and that apparently goes against the rules. Talackova was originally selected as one of 65 finalists and her profile and photos have been pulled from the Miss Universe Canada website. The website states that to enter, women must be a Canadian citizen and between the ages of 18 - 27, if basic requirements are met, they are asked to fill out a longer application. The form makes no reference to sexual reassignment and this is a bogus reason to kick her out of the competition. Miss Universe Canada released a pathetic statement:

Jenna Talackova from Vancouver, British Columbia will not compete in the 2012 Miss Universe Canada competition because she did not meet the requirements to compete despite having stated otherwise on her entry form. We do however, respect her goals, determination and wish her the best.
