Ellen Fights for Equality in Australia

Ellen posted this beautiful tribute to her wife. I look at my own wife and can't imagine anyone telling me that our love is lesser than a straight couple. I could not love anyone more. C'mon Australia, do the right thing.

Bank Tells Same-Sex Couples To Hold Tight

The Australia & New Zealand Banking Group (ANZ) are encouraging same-sex couples to hold hands. It's heart breaking to think we have to fear touching the ones we love. Grab a tissue, you may need it #holdtight.

Rugby Star Stands Up Against Gay Slurs

David Pocock is a rugby star from Australia and my new favourite professional athlete.  He's straight but he didn't put up with gay slurs during a recent match. Multiple team mates told Pocock that a player on the other team was calling them 'faggots' to put them down.  Pocock used to be the captain of Australia's national team and has always been an advocate for the LGBT community.   He brought the offending player's comments to the ref's attention during the game. After the game he stated:
As players, we’ve said the Brumbies aren’t going to tolerate any homophobic slurs, I just made that clear to the referee that it’s unacceptable. You can be the toughest man in the world, but it’s got nothing to do with using that sort of language.

Singing Awesome Response To Hater

Axel Winter is an amazing artist from Australia and he did a pretty incredible thing.  On the same day as Sydney's Mardi Gras Parade, a god slinging hater was preaching antigay crap to a crowd.  Instead of openly challenging him, Axel sings Girls Just Wanna Have Fun and drowns out his hate with love.

Olympic Swimmer Ian Thorpe Comes Out

Swimmer Ian Thorpe won 5 medals at the Olympics in Sydney in 2000.  He has decided to tell the world he is gay and admits to being treated for alcoholism and depression in the past.  It's no wonder he needed to come out.  I wish it wasn't such a big deal for athletes but sadly it is and the more that come out the better.

Pink Called a Lesbian

Pink did a concert in Melbourne, Australia this past weekend and pissed some people off.  During her concert a fan gave her a pride flag and she danced on stage wearing it.  I love her response on Twitter to the ignorant haters.
Fun fact: when you twitter me and say 'you're a lesbian' it really doesn't bother me at all. It's a compliment. Most of my fav ppl are, so...I'm sure all of you hate filled humans can come up with something a little worse than that?!? Come on-be creative. You have 140 characters!

Melissa March Comes Out

Australian basketball player Melissa Marsh has decided to publicly come out....as straight. I know you are thinking the same as me, what the hell? She is making this statement because she feels it is a sad reality that the first thing that pops in ones mind about top female athletes is their sexual orientation. Hmmm, maybe if people weren't homophobic it wouldn't matter either way and no one would have to come out as gay or straight. At least she's a good ball player, I don't think her intelligence is going to take her very far.

Chris Hemsworth on Cover of Out

Chris Hemsworth is on the cover of the May 2012 Out Magazine and damn he is handsome.  Not only is he incredibly beautiful, he is from Australia (mmm accent) and he is queer friendly.  Sadly, he has been married to his wife since 2010.  Oh well, he's still pretty to look at.

Gus Johnston: The reality of homophobia in sport

Australian hockey star Gus Johnston has released his take on homophobia in sport. I think a lot of gay athletes can relate with what he has to say.
After many years of competing in hockey at an elite level, I've decided to share my story and experience with homophobia in sport. It's taken me many years to find the strength to share it, but I hope that people find value in hearing it.

Gay Zombie Movie Fined & Banned

The director of Melbourne Underground Film Festival was forced to pay $750.00 for the illegal screening of the horror movie LA Zombie by Bruce LaBruce. Richard Wolstencroft was had to pay the money to the Royal Children’s Hospital as punishment for screening the film, starring gay porn model François Sagat. The film was originally to be screened at the festival in July 2010, but Classification Australia refused to grant classification to the flick, thus making it illegal to show in Australia. Boo to censorship down under.
